This is the third and final portion of my interview with Aditya Kripalani, author of Back Seat. This is my favorite part of the interview as it offers an interesting look into inspirational authors as well as some awesome advice for other writers! Enjoy.
Q: What are some of the authors that have inspired you?
A: Ernest Hemingway for the fact that he such a romantic at heart and writes with such authority. And I absolutely love ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ and ‘ The Old Man and the Sea’ and ‘Death in the Afternoon’.
Hunter S. Thompson for ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’, ‘Transmetropolitan’ which is based on him, ‘Hell’s Angels’ and ‘The Rum Diary’ not to forget ‘The Curse of Lono’.
Andrea Camilleri for his entire ‘Inspector Montalbano’ series.
Raymond Chandler, Gregory David Roberts whose ‘Shantaram’ inspired me to write a book.
Q: Did you always want to be a writer?
A: When I was 17 I wanted to be an actor. Then in two years that dream was finished. Then I wanted to make films. That dies a natural death when I began writing, which was 9 years ago. And at this point I feel I want to write for life.
Q: What is the best advice you can offer an aspiring writer?
A: Don’t write for anyone other than yourself. Write what you like to read. And choose to BE a writer. Not just [to] become famous or make money. BEing a writer is about a lot more.

Here is the continuation of my interview with Aditya Kripalani, author of Back Seat. I think that he has a lot of interesting things to say! Enjoy!
Q: Which character do you empathize with the most, and why?
A: Nikita. for it is her story. And she is the most complex of the three. She is a survivor and will survive almost everything. But does she have what it takes to be in love and make it work? That is what intrigues me the most. For a lot of us in becoming survivors lose the ability and aspects of our personality it takes to be in love. Also will she be able to react to the present without the burden of her dramatic past?
Q: What was the most difficult part of the writing process?
A: The ending. It scared me. And I was unsure. But only for a while then there has been only strength and surety.
Q: What is the writing process like for you (how many hours a day do you dedicate to writing, etc.)?
A: Can’t do more than 3 hours a day. I find it too exhausting. And I normally sit first thing in the morning or then late at night. And I use the principals of screenwriting to write a book. At least the core principles of PREMISE, central conflict, writing a 15 page treatment note and reworking it time and again before writing out the actual book etc.
