Cheers to the Professor

It started with The Hobbit (movie due out in 2012!) when I was about eleven and then expanded to The Lord of the Rings trilogy around a year later. Very few authors have held such sway over my childhood as J.R.R. Tolkien did. I remember sobbing despondently throughout the trilogy and like a true fan showed up to see each of the films on their opening nights. When all three were out on DVD I proceeded to re-read the entire trilogy (over a period of three weeks) and then watched all three films in one day. And I learned two things from this: the first is that too much Tolkien in one day actually makes me dizzy and a bit paranoid, the second was that not only was he a brilliant writer but his stories are epic and timeless. And according to thisrecording.com The Hobbit is listed as one of the top 100 greatest fantasy novels of all time (number 57) – but I think I already knew that! Perhaps I am a bit too obsessed with this writer but I have raised my glass in toast today for what would have been his 119th birthday. Perhaps you would like to do the same. :)
