Bringing the iPad to ... Kindergarten?

I never thought that I would be jealous of a kindergartner. Sure they have relatively leisurely lives, very few worries, and their whole life ahead of them, but I don’t miss the sticky days of play-doh and melted crayons. But envy reared its ugly head when I heard that a kindergarten in Maine has purchased nearly 300 iPads to hand out in order to assist their young students in learning how to read and write. “Really?” I must ask. In times of economic duress and with plenty of teachers being laid off I find it hard to believe that our education system would prefer to focus on spending a couple hundred thousand dollars on technology like this for groups of 4 and 5 year olds.
