Silent Influence

Yesterday The Guardian featured an interesting article titled Which are literature's greatest unseen characters?. This article discusses the interesting topic of literary characters that don’t have any lines but still manage to have a great impact on the reader. The main example given in this article is the character Sauron from author J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. I am a great fan of The Lord of the Rings books and I have read the trilogy quite a few times but this is the first time I have ever noticed that throughout the whole series Sauron never says a word and yet remains one of the scariest (and most mysterious) personalities. Can you think of any other silent, yet powerful literary characters? :)
