Cheers to the Professor

It started with The Hobbit (movie due out in 2012!) when I was about eleven and then expanded to The Lord of the Rings trilogy around a year later. Very few authors have held such sway over my childhood as J.R.R. Tolkien did. I remember sobbing despondently throughout the trilogy and like a true fan showed up to see each of the films on their opening nights. When all three were out on DVD I proceeded to re-read the entire trilogy (over a period of three weeks) and then watched all three films in one day. And I learned two things from this: the first is that too much Tolkien in one day actually makes me dizzy and a bit paranoid, the second was that not only was he a brilliant writer but his stories are epic and timeless. And according to The Hobbit is listed as one of the top 100 greatest fantasy novels of all time (number 57) – but I think I already knew that! Perhaps I am a bit too obsessed with this writer but I have raised my glass in toast today for what would have been his 119th birthday. Perhaps you would like to do the same. :)
