Too Much of a Good Thing

Have you ever taken one of those English classes that involves intense dissection of a work of literature – sometimes so intense that at some point along the way you begin to lose track of not only the reason why you are taking the class but also the whole purpose behind reading just for the fun of it? I know I have, and this has caused me to wonder at what point is too much analysis of a work of literature considered, well, going a bit overboard. I have often had the chilling feeling that sometimes we are analyzing things which authors simply meant to literally mean what they wrote them as. What do you think? When is it simply too much?
